Sometimes children have trouble staying focused, paying attention or sitting still in class. Sometimes the cause of this is ADHD. The child does want to be a good student, but their behavior and problems paying attention in class causes problems for them. Teachers, parents, and friends see the behavior but they may not know exactly what is wrong. A majority of children in school have trouble paying attention, get easily distracted, are impulsive or hyperactive, but the ADHD child exhibits these symptoms and behaviors more frequently and severely than other children.
While ADHD is often diagnosed in childhood, some patients slip through the cracks without receiving an appropriate ADHD diagnosis. Dr. Shapiro is equipped to work with both children and adults suffering from ADHD.
What are the symptoms of ADD/ADHD in children and adolescents?

How is ADD/ADHD assessed and treated?
A comprehensive evaluation is needed when ADD/ADHD is suspected. It is possible that a child with ADD/ADHD may also have other psychiatric disorders or learning disabilities. With the help of a child psychiatrist, a comprehensive evaluation is the first step in developing a treatment plan.
Without treatment, the child may fall behind in school and friendships, and their self-esteem may also suffer. Medications, including stimulants and non-stimulants, can help improve attention, focus, behavior and organizational skills. Other medications such as antidepressants may also be helpful.
Other treatment approaches may include cognitive-behavioral therapy, social skill development, parent education, and modifications to the child’s education program. Behavioral therapy can help a child control their aggression, social behavior and help them become more productive. Therapy can also help build the child’s self-esteem, lessen negative thoughts and improve their problem-solving skills. A therapist can also work with the parents to develop skills and tools that can be implemented at home. If extenuating Accommodations are necessary, a therapist can work with you and your child’s school to facilitate modifications including but not limited to extended-testing time or note-taking assistance.
A child with ADD/ADHD who receives appropriate treatment can have a productive and successful life.
