Evaluation

We begin treatment with a thorough evaluation. For children, the evaluation consists of three parts; for adults it consists of two. After an intake phone interview, a therapist is selected by Dr. Shapiro to best fit the incoming patient. The first meeting pertains specifically to children. Parents will meet with this therapist to discuss their concerns and family history. The parents and school will be given paperwork to fill out and return before the next appointment.

During the second part of the evaluation (or first for adults) the therapist and patient will meet alone allowing the therapist to get to know the patient better. This includes an in depth interview in a relaxed, casual setting.

Prior to the third meeting, Dr. Shapiro and the treating therapist meet to review all assessments and score all rating scales, including those submitted by parents and teachers for children. They will look over the thirteen pages of information collected by the therapist.

Dr Shapiro meets with the patient, and if applicable, the parents, during the  third session. He will talk with the patient and his or her parents if applicable, perform a comprehensive exam and provide and an accurate diagnosis of the primary problem and underlying issues.  He then will recommend appropriate medication and choose a therapist best suited to work with the patient to create an overall team of doctor, therapist, and patient to bring about positive noticeable changes as quickly as possible.

Each section of this unique process lasts about one hour.

The patient then visits Dr Shapiro once a month to properly monitor medication, if prescribed, and to evaluate progress.
